Floors inside a finished building
An interior floor goes into a room that already has walls, a roof and one doorway, and that shapes the whole day. No machine swings inside it, the concrete arrives by barrow or through a pump line, and out of the sun the surface stiffens slowly, so the trowel passes run late into the evening. What the floor has to be is settled well before that morning: flat enough for whatever is laid on top of it, and dry enough that the covering stays stuck to it.
SkyVale Jurupa Valley Concrete was founded in 2025 by Daniel Reyes, after 12 years on Inland Empire crews, and he walks the straightedge behind the screed himself. Three rooms account for most of this work here. An ADU on a lot with the room for one, a bedroom or family room added onto a house in Pedley or Glen Avon, and the detached shop or barn at the back of an acre lot that is being turned into living space or a workshop somebody actually works in.
A floor replacing a floor inside the same walls is minor work. A floor under new habitable space belongs to that building permit, and where the walls are new as well the pad beneath them is a slab foundation rather than a floor. The crew holds a CSLB C-8 concrete license with liability insurance on every job, works to the California Residential Code, and every floor carries a written workmanship guarantee against defects in how it was built.
Warning signs
A barn, tack room or shop with a dirt floor, or a two-inch skim somebody mixed on site, cannot carry a covering or a permit. There is nothing under it to stop ground water, nothing to hold a fixing, and no thickness to cut a joint into, so the floor is built rather than repaired.
Cardboard that darkens where it sits, tools going orange on a bottom shelf and a slab that stays cool and tacky in February are all one thing: vapor moving up out of the ground. A humidity probe set at 40 percent of the slab depth turns that into a figure you can act on.
A line that shows through plank or sheet vinyl in the same place every time is the slab underneath opening, not the covering wearing. Concrete with no joints cut into it chooses its own, usually from a door opening or an inside corner, and it will find the new floor as well.
Rest a 10-foot straightedge on the floor and rock it. More than 3/16 of an inch of daylight under the middle puts a wardrobe on three feet, leaves lippage between tiles and shows as a wave once any sheen goes on it. Levelling compound spread thin over that cracks back out.

The finish is chosen before the pour, not after it, because the mix, the trowel passes and the joint layout all follow from it.
Local knowledge
Most interior floors here go into buildings that were never meant to be lived in, and the rest go into buildings full of pallets.
Lots out here run to an acre and more, and plenty came with a detached shop, barn or stable the family no longer uses. Turning one into an ADU or a workshop is the commonest interior floor we cast, and it is a harder room than an addition: the walls are up, the posts of a pole frame land inside the floor area, and the only way in is a single door. So the joint grid is drawn around those posts and openings first, and concrete arrives by barrow or pump line rather than off a chute.
The other half of the work is the light-industrial ground around Mira Loma, where a unit in the warehouse corridor gets a floor built for what stands on it rather than what is laid over it. Under both, on the flats, is Santa Ana River sand, which drains fast and passes vapor upward for the life of the building, so an interior slab here is cast on a lapped and taped sheet and then read with a probe rather than by eye. A floor still reading wet at 28 days keeps the covering in its boxes.

Five stages from the measurement to the day the readings are handed over. The two that decide the result both happen before any concrete is ordered: the height the floor is set to, and the flatness the finish is written to.

Within 3/16 of an inch under a 10-foot straightedge, which is the figure most plank and click-lock makers write into their warranty. It is what the wet slab is screeded to and what the finished floor is checked against before the crew leaves. Past that number the locking edges start carrying load the floor should, which is what makes a new covering drum underfoot in its second year.
About a month. The slab is kept damp for the first seven days, reaches full strength at 28, and only then can a relative humidity probe be read fairly. Most makers refuse to warranty a covering over a reading above 75 percent, and the American Cement Association is plain that with a sheet underneath, the water has to leave through the top face.
On a grid no wider than 12 feet, pulled so the lines run off the door openings and pass either side of any post standing in the floor. A slab left to itself cracks from an inside corner outward, and a post cast into the middle of a bay is exactly that corner. The cuts are drawn on paper at the visit and sawn within hours of the finish.
Yes, and it suits a converted outbuilding more than a house does, because those slabs were never insulated from the ground. Rigid board goes under the floor and around its edge first, the loops are tied to the reinforcement so they sit inside the concrete rather than beneath it, and they are pressure tested and left under pressure with the gauge visible through the pour.
Concrete shrinks as it dries, so the floor is jointed to decide where that shows instead of leaving it to choose.
